The Tortoise and the Electrode
Pratyāhāra says the senses withdraw from their objects. In 1961 four yogis in samādhi had a light shone at them, a hot glass tube laid on them, and a tuning fork struck — and their alpha rhythm did not break.
The Bhagavad Gītā gives the image:
यदा संहरते चायं कूर्मोऽङ्गानीव सर्वशः । इन्द्रियाणीन्द्रियार्थेभ्यस् तस्य प्रज्ञा प्रतिष्ठिता ॥ ५८ ॥
yadā saṃharate cāyaṃ kūrmo'ṅgānīva sarvaśaḥ | indriyāṇīndriyārthebhyas tasya prajñā pratiṣṭhitā ||
When he draws in the senses from the objects of the senses, entirely, as a tortoise draws in its limbs — his understanding is established.
Patañjali makes it the fifth limb and defines it functionally: when the senses are disengaged from their own objects, and follow, as it were, the nature of the mind itself — that is pratyāhāra. The next sūtra states the result in three words: ततः परमा वश्यतेन्द्रियाणाम्, tataḥ paramā vaśyatendriyāṇām, from that, the highest mastery of the senses.
This is a testable claim. It says a person can be in a state in which a stimulus arrives at the sense organ and does not reach the mind.
Alpha, and what breaks it
The electroencephalogram has one robust, century-old finding: close your eyes and rest, and a rhythm around 8–12 Hz appears over the back of the head. Open your eyes, or hear a sudden sound, or attend to anything, and it disappears. This is alpha blocking, and it is one of the most reliable phenomena in electrophysiology. Repeat the same stimulus enough times and the blocking fades — the brain stops treating a known sound as news. That is habituation.
So: give a stimulus, watch whether the alpha breaks. It is a crude instrument for asking whether something reached the mind, and it was the instrument available.
Four yogis, 1961
Three physiologists at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences recorded four yogis who practiced samādhi.
Their resting records showed persistent alpha with increased amplitude modulation during samādhi. Then the stimuli: strong light, a loud banging noise, being touched with a hot glass tube, the vibration of a tuning fork.
The alpha did not block. Not attenuated — not blocked. And the same yogis' alpha blocked normally to the same stimuli when they were not meditating.
Two of them, who could keep a hand in ice-cold water for forty-five to fifty-five minutes, showed persistent alpha throughout that too.
Four people is four people. But note what the finding is not: it is not a report of relaxation. It is a report that a hot glass tube laid on the skin produced no cortical response, in men who responded normally to it minutes earlier.
Zen, and the opposite result
Five years later, two researchers in Japan recorded forty-eight Sōtō and Rinzai priests and disciples during zazen. They found alpha appearing with the eyes open, increasing in amplitude and slowing in frequency, with rhythmic theta trains in the most experienced — and the EEG changes tracked the Zen master's independent rating of each monk's state.
Then they clicked. A click every fifteen seconds, twenty times.
The monks' alpha blocked to every single click. It did not habituate. A control group showed the ordinary habituation curve — by the tenth click the sound had stopped registering. The monks registered all twenty, each about as strongly as the first, then returned to rhythm each time.
Set the two side by side and they are not the same result. They are opposite results, and this is the most interesting thing in the whole literature.
Which is roughly what the two traditions say they are doing. Samādhi as described in the Sanskrit texts is absorption — the senses gathered in, the tortoise. Zazen is not that; it is sitting with eyes open, meeting whatever arrives. Two techniques, two physiological signatures, each matching its own description.
That is a stronger result than either study alone. If meditation produced one generic relaxation state, the recordings would look alike. They do not.
The metabolic version
The third classic in this group measured something else. Fifteen practitioners of transcendental meditation had oxygen consumption, heart rate, skin resistance and EEG recorded before, during and after practice. Oxygen consumption fell, heart rate fell, skin resistance rose, and alpha amplitude increased.
What sixty years of this amounts to
Less than the enthusiasts claim, more than the skeptics allow.
What is genuinely shown: that trained meditators produce EEG states distinguishable from ordinary rest; that those states differ between traditions in ways that track what each tradition says it is doing; that metabolic rate drops; that in a small number of adepts, sensory stimuli that reliably interrupt the cortex failed to interrupt it.
What is not shown: causation, dose, mechanism, or that any of this generalizes past a handful of unusually accomplished people who were selected precisely because they were unusual.
The tortoise verse does not need vindication from four EEG traces. But there is something worth noticing in the fact that when someone finally hooked the practice to an instrument, the instrument recorded the specific thing the verse describes — not calm, not sleep, but a stimulus arriving at a body and going no further.
